Park Babelsberg, der til UNESCO verdensarv, ligger nordøst for Potsdams bycentrum i bydelen Babelsberg, grænsende op til Havelens Dybe Sø og Glienicker Sø. Den er ca. 124 hektar stor. Det skrånerende, kuperede terræn ned mod søen blev først formet som parklandskab af landskabsarkitekten Peter Joseph Lenné, og derefter af Prins Hermann von Pückler-Muskau – begge på opdrag af Prins Wilhelm og hans gemalinde Augusta.
Prins Wilhelm stræbte – efter at hans bror Carl havde fået Glienicke Slot, og hans bror Friedrich Wilhelm IV. havde fået Charlottenhof bygget – også efter at få bygget sin egen bolig. Han fik støtte til dette projekt fra landskabsarkitekten Peter Joseph Lenné, der ønskede at forvandle omgivelserne omkring Potsdam til et Gesamtkunstwerk og så muligheden for kunstnerisk at ændre og inkludere Babelsberg som den østlige afslutning.
