El parque de Babelsberg, que forma parte del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO, se encuentra al noreste del centro de la ciudad de Potsdam, en el distrito de Babelsberg, adyacente al lago profundo de la Havel y al lago Glienicker. Tiene una superficie de aproximadamente 124 hectáreas. El terreno, que desciende hacia el lago, fue diseñado como un paisaje de parque por el arquitecto paisajista Peter Joseph Lenné, y posteriormente por el príncipe Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, ambos por encargo del príncipe Wilhelm y su esposa Augusta.
El príncipe Wilhelm también aspiraba a construir una residencia propia después de que se erigieran el castillo de Glienicke para su hermano Carl y Charlottenhof para su hermano Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Para este proyecto, recibió apoyo del arquitecto paisajista Peter Joseph Lenné, quien quería transformar los alrededores de Potsdam en una obra de arte total y vio así la oportunidad de cambiar e integrar Babelsberg como cierre artístico al este.
