Krigsfortjenstkorset blev stiftet den 8. december 1914 af prins Leopold IV. til Lippe og kunne tildeles alle personer, der gennem mod eller særlige præstationer i krig, eller gennem fortjenester opnået i hjemlandet for hærenes interesser, f.eks. præstationer for tropperne, omsorg for de sårede, officiel eller privat aktivitet, der fremmer den militære succes, havde fortjent det.
