Pyramiden er en del af en samlet anlæg, der består af Slot Garzau og den tilhørende landskabspark. Friedrich Wilhelm Carl Greve von Schmettau anlagde parken fra 1779; pyramiden blev opført i 1784 og skulle oprindeligt fungere som mausoleum for greven. Men han solgte ejendommen i 1802. I 1911 brændte forgængeren til slottet, herregården Garzau, ned. Mens slottet blev genopbygget, forfaldt pyramiden. På grund af sit udseende kaldte man bygningen i landsbyen "Ritterburg". Den blev først genopdaget i 1999. Et år senere blev Foreningen Pyramide og Slotpark Garzau stiftet, som frigav bygningen og genopbyggede den i perioden 2000 til 2010 hovedsageligt med egne midler. Indvendigt er den i dag stort set bevaret i originalstand.
