De piramide maakt deel uit van een overkoepelend complex dat bestaat uit het kasteel Garzau en het bijbehorende landschapspark. Friedrich Wilhelm Carl Count von Schmettau creeerde het park in 1779. De piramide werd gebouwd in 1784 en was bedoeld als een mausoleum voor de graaf. Hij verkocht echter het landgoed in 1802. In 1911 brandde Herrenhaus Garzau af. Tijdens het herbouwen van het kasteel werd de piramide een ruine. Door het uiterlijk werd het gebouw de "Ritterburg" genoemd. Het werd in de jaren 2000 tot 2010 verbouwd. Het interieur is nu grotendeels in de oorspronkelijke staat.
