Kristi sandaler er en af de mest betydningsfulde relikvier fra middelalderen. Da Pippin III. i 754 indgik en aftale om grundlæggelsen af kirke staten med pave Stefan II. i Pippins donation, var der forudgået nogle modydelser fra kirken. Stefans forgænger, pave Zacharias, havde anerkendt Pippins valg som konge og overdraget ham Kristi sandals relikvie i 752.
Udover deres religiøse betydning var relikvien den materielle legemliggørelse af, hvad paverne kunne tilbyde den franske konge: legitimering gennem kirken.
