I året 842 nævnes stedet for første gang som „Negelstete“. Omkring 1200 havde allerede herrerne fra Döllstedt ejerskab i byen. I 1222 erhvervede Den Tyske Orden, Ballei Thüringen, i Nägelstedt en godsgård med patronatsret over St.-Georgs Kirke. Ordenen styrkede sin position i regionen ved at udvide denne ejendom til Komturhof Nägelstedt. Komturhof blev administrationscentrum for en række steder inden for en radius af tyve kilometer. Ordenen havde sæde i Nägelstedt indtil ophævelsen i 1809.
Under Bondekrigen blev det øverste kvarter, der blev beboet af frie, velhavende bønder, og dets St.-Michaels Kirke ødelagt. Selv i 1540, da der fandt en visitation sted i anledning af indførelsen af reformationen, blev Michaeliskirke og dens præstegård fundet i ruiner. I det 16./17. århundrede blev Michaelskirke genopbygget.
