Mulsum er den ældste landsby i kommunen og blev første gang nævnt i dokumenter mellem 1111 og 1116 som Mulesla. Det er også bekræftet, at der allerede dengang var et eget sogn.
Over landsbyens torv fører den gamle markedvej, som allerede i middelalderen forbandt markedspladserne i Bremervörde og Horneburg.
