Vlatten ligger indlejret i en blid dal i Voreifel ved den østlige udkant af Heimbach. Ved siden af Vlatten ligger Wollersheim, Hergarten og Heimbach.
De første bosættelser er allerede sket i romertiden. Den karolingeriske kongesæde fik ifølge "Regesta Imperii" besøg to gange: Første gang i 839, da kejser Ludvig den Fromme i "Flatera" modtog biskop af Poitiers, og anden gang i 846, da kejser Lothar I. i "Flattana pal r" underskrev en gave til klosteret Prüm. Derefter er dokumenterne tavse i lang tid. Stednavnet "Vlatten" er dog sandsynligvis allerede af keltisk oprindelse.
