Vlatten está incrustado en un valle suave de Voreifel, en el lado este de la ciudad de Heimbach. Junto a Vlatten se encuentran Wollersheim, Hergarten y Heimbach.
Los primeros asentamientos ya se dieron en la época de los romanos. Según los "Regesta Imperii", la palacio real carolingio recibió visitas en dos ocasiones: la primera vez en 839, cuando el emperador Luis el Piadoso recibió al obispo de Poitiers en "Flatera", y la segunda vez en 846, cuando el emperador Lotario I firmó una donación al monasterio de Prüm en "Flattana pal r". Luego, los documentos permanecen en silencio durante mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, el nombre del lugar "Vlatten" probablemente ya tiene un origen celta.
