Det er opkaldt efter Manuel Prudencio de Molviedro, en arkitekt der på opdrag af assistenten i Sevilla, markisen af Montereal, i det 18. århundrede transformerede den gamle Mancebía i området omkring lagunen.
Siden middelalderen har det heddet Plaza de la Laguna de la Mancebía. I 1848 blev det kaldt Plaza de Molviedro, og i dag hedder det stadig sådan.
I dag (2024) er Plaza de Molviedro et boligområde uden beboere, et hotel ejer bygningerne.
