Øen Mont-Saint-Michel er bygget af blokke af granit eller granulit. Le Mont-Saint-Michel var tidligere forbundet med fastlandet via en tynd naturlig landbro, som før moderniseringen var dækket ved højvande og afsløret ved lavvande.
Før bygningen af den første klosterinstallation i det 8. århundrede, blev øen kaldt "monte tombe". Ifølge legenden dukkede ærkeenglen Skt. Michael op for Skt. Aubert, biskop af Avranches, i 708 og beordrede ham at bygge en kirke på den klippefyldte ø. Aubert ignorerede gentagne gange englenes instrukser, indtil Skt. Michael brændte et hul i biskoppens kranium med sin finger.
Øen optræder også på Bayeux-tapetet, som mindes den normanniske erobring af England i 1066.
Mont-Saint-Michel og dens bugt blev tilføjet UNESCOs liste over verdensarvssteder i 1979.
