Die Insel Mont-Saint-Michel besteht aus Granit- oder Granulitblöcken. Le Mont-Saint-Michel war früher über eine dünne natürliche Landbrücke mit dem Festland verbunden, die vor der Modernisierung bei Flut bedeckt und bei Ebbe sichtbar war.
Vor dem Bau der ersten klösterlichen Einrichtung im 8. Jahrhundert wurde die Insel "monte tombe" genannt. Der Legende nach erschien der Erzengel St. Michael 708 dem Bischof von Avranches, St. Aubert, und wies ihn an, eine Kirche auf dem felsigen Eiland zu bauen. Aubert ignorierte wiederholt die Anweisung des Engels, bis St. Michael mit seinem Finger ein Loch in den Schädel des Bischofs brannte.
Die Insel erscheint auch auf dem Wandteppich von Bayeux, der die normannische Eroberung Englands im Jahr 1066 commemoriert.
Der Mont-Saint-Michel und seine Bucht wurden 1979 in die UNESCO-Liste des Weltkulturerbes aufgenommen.
