Fort des Dunes, den eneste landfæstning af typen SERE DE RIVIERES, der er bygget ved kysten, skulle blive en af de vigtigste dele af forsvaret af Dunkerque. Den samlede overflade af strukturen og den omkringliggende glacis er 12 hektar. Omkring 40.000.000 mursten var nødvendige for at bygge det mellem 1878 og 1880. I 1940 blev det kommandopunkt for 12. DIM under kommando af general Janssen under Operation Dynamo i juni 1940. Besat af tyskerne blev det en del af Atlantvolden og et annex til batteriet Zuydcoote.
