Het Fort des Dunes, het enige landfort van het type SERE DE RIVIERES dat aan de kust is gebouwd, moest een van de belangrijkste onderdelen van de verdediging van Duinkerke worden. De totale oppervlakte van de structuur en de omliggende glacis is 12 hectare. Ongeveer 40.000.000 bakstenen waren nodig om het tussen 1878 en 1880 te bouwen. In 1940 werd het het commandopunt van de 12e DIM onder bevel van generaal Janssen ten tijde van Operatie Dynamo in juni 1940. Bezet door de Duitsers, werd het een onderdeel van de Atlantikwall en een annex van de batterij Zuydcoote.
