El Fuerte de las Dunas, el único fuerte terrestre del tipo SERE DE RIVIERES construido en la costa, debía ser uno de los componentes más importantes de la defensa de Dunkerque. La superficie total de la estructura y del glacis circundante es de 12 hectáreas. Se necesitaron aproximadamente 40.000.000 de ladrillos para construirlo entre 1878 y 1880. En 1940 se convirtió en el puesto de mando de la 12ª DIM bajo el mando del general Janssen durante la Operación Dinamo en junio de 1940. Ocupado por los alemanes, se convirtió en parte del Muro Atlántico y en una anexión de la batería Zuydcoote.
