Le fort des dunes, le seul fort terrestre de type SERE DE RIVIERES construit sur le littoral devait être l'une des piéce maitresse de la défense de Dunkerque. La superficie totale, de l'ouvrage et des glacis environnants est de 12 hectares . 40 000 000 de briques environ furent nécessaires à son édification entre 1878 et 1880.En 1940 , il devient le poste de commandement de la 12°DIM sous les ordre du général Janssen au moment de l'opération dynamo en juin 1940. Occupé par les allemands , il devint un élement du mur de l'atlantique et une annexe de la batterie de Zuydcoote
