Dronning Victoria besøgte Napoleons grav i 1855. Hun ønskede at se den store mand, der havde truet hendes land mest. Med Dronningen denne gang var Prins Albert, Prinsesse Royale og den unge Prins af Wales. De var ledsaget af Napoleon III og hans kone. Dronningen satte tilsyneladende sin hånd på den unge prins' skulder og bad ham om at knæle foran graven til den "Store Napoleon." Det var skumring, da hun trådte ind i Les Invalides, og mørke stormskyer gled over den gyldne kuppel. Mens hun så på graven, lyste et lyn op i himlen, som oplyste graven og belyste N'et i fodenden, efterfulgt af et kraftigt tordenvejr. Organisten begyndte at spille nationalmelodien. "Mærkelig og vidunderlig virkelig!" var Dronningens kommentar!
