La regina Vittoria visitò la tomba di Napoleone nel 1855. Voleva vedere il grande uomo che più aveva minacciato il suo paese. Con la regina in questa occasione c'erano il principe Alberto, la principessa reale e il giovane principe di Galles. Erano accompagnati da Napoleone III e sua moglie. Apparentemente, la regina pose la mano sulla spalla del giovane principe e gli disse di inginocchiarsi davanti alla tomba del "Grande Napoleone." Era sera quando entrò negli Invalides e scuri nuvoloni di tempesta scorrevano sopra la cupola dorata. Mentre osservava la tomba, un fulmine squarciò il cielo, illuminando la tomba e accendendo la N all'estremità della tomba, seguito da un pesante tuono. L'organista intonò l'inno nazionale. "Strano e meraviglioso in effetti!" fu il commento della regina!
