Bath blev grundlagt, midt mellem de omgivende bakker, i dalen ved floden Avon omkring naturligt forekommende varme kilder, hvor romerne badede og byggede et tempel, og gav det navnet Aquae Sulis. Edgar blev kronet som konge af England i 973 i Bath's kloster. Meget senere blev det populært som kursted i den georgianske periode, hvilket førte til en stor udvidelse, der efterlod et arv af eksemplarisk georgiansk arkitektur lavet af Bath-sten.
Byen blev i 1987 en verdensarvssted og har en række teatre, museer og andre kulturelle og sportslige steder, der har bidraget til udviklingen af et vigtigt centrum for turisme, med mere end en million overnattende besøgende og 3,8 millioner dagsbesøgende om året i byen.
