Heathfield ligger nær sammenløbet af to hovedveje: A267 mellem Royal Tunbridge Wells og Eastbourne; og A265 fra Hawkhurst. Det er næsten lige langt fra Tunbridge Wells og Eastbourne: cirka 16 km.
Historisk set lå Heathfield på en gammel vej, der forbinder South Downs med Weald. Dets markedskontrakt blev givet i februar 1316 under Edward II's regeringstid. Den Wealden jern bragte velstand til byen i det 16. og 17. århundrede. Jernbanens komme i 1880 gav det endnu en ny chance for livet. Denne var ikke en økonomisk succes, og sidebanen mellem Eridge og Polegate blev lukket i 1968. Sporområdet hedder nu Cuckoo Trail, som er en del af det nationale cyklenetværk.
