Heathfield liegt nahe der Kreuzung zweier Hauptstraßen: der A267 zwischen Royal Tunbridge Wells und Eastbourne; und der A265 von Hawkhurst. Es ist fast gleich weit von Tunbridge Wells und Eastbourne entfernt: etwa 16 Meilen.
Historisch gesehen lag Heathfield an einem alten Weg, der die South Downs mit dem Weald verband. Die Marktcharta wurde im Februar 1316 während der Herrschaft von Edward II. erteilt. Das Wealden-Eisen brachte im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert Wohlstand in die Stadt. Die Ankunft der Eisenbahn im Jahr 1880 gab ihr einen neuen Lebenszweck. Letzterer war kein finanzieller Erfolg, und die Nebenstrecke zwischen Eridge und Polegate wurde 1968 geschlossen. Das Gleisbett wird jetzt Cuckoo Trail genannt, ein Teil des Nationalen Radnetzes.
