Grækerne betragtede Delfi som navlen (eller centrum) af verden, repræsenteret ved den stenmærkning, der er kendt som Omphalos i Delfi. Ifølge myterne om grundlæggelsen af Delfiske Orakel, sendte Zeus, i sit forsøg på at lokalisere jordens centrum, to ørne fra verdens to ender, og ørne, der startede samtidig og fløj med lige hastighed, krydsede deres veje over området ved Delfi. Fra dette punkt kastede Zeus en sten fra himlen for at se, hvor den ville falde. Stenen faldt ved Delfi, som siden da har været betragtet som verdens centrum, omphalos – "navlen af jorden".
