I det klassiske Grækenland var Lerna en region med kilder og en tidligere sø nær østkysten af Peloponnes, syd for Argos. Selvom meget af området er sumpet, ligger Lerna på et geografisk smalt punkt mellem bjergene og havet, langs en gammel rute fra Argolid til den sydlige Peloponnes; denne placering kan have resulteret i betydningen af bosættelsen.
