In het klassieke Griekenland was Lerna een regio van bronnen en een voormalige meer dicht bij de oostkust van de Peloponnesus, ten zuiden van Argos. Hoewel veel van het gebied moerassig is, ligt Lerna op een geografisch smal punt tussen bergen en de zee, langs een oude route van de Argolid naar het zuidelijke Peloponnesus; deze locatie kan hebben bijgedragen aan het belang van de nederzetting.
