Historikere mener, at landet kan være blevet grundlagt mellem det 4. og 5. århundrede, da indbyggerne i dalene blev tvunget til at trække sig tilbage til høje steder for at beskytte sig mod barbariske invasioner. Navnet på landet optræder første gang i et dokument fra 1042, som nu opbevares i Statens Arkiv i Torino, hvor det blev nævnt som Fontinalis. Mellem det 12. og 13. århundrede findes det i stedet som Fontanellis samt i et dokument som Fontanis, men lokalt begynder navnet Fontanilis at blive brugt, hvilket først optræder i Mombaruzzos statutter fra 1337 og senere i andre notariske dokumenter. I overgangen fra latin til italiensk er Fontanilis blevet erstattet af det nuværende Fontanile, som betyder "jord rig på kilder".
