Byen blev først nævnt i 1153 som Ouermunte. Det nuværende navn betyder "mundingen af Ur", men Ur er senere flyttet til landsbyen. Urmond udviklede sig på den højere bred af Maas. I 1400 blev det en del af hertugdømmet Jülich. Den gamle St. Martinus Kirke blev bygget mellem 1791 og 1793. Det middelalderlige tårn blev placeret i 1841. Kirkegården er kunstigt forhøjet. I 1695 blev en nederlandsk reformeret kirke bygget i Urmond, som er usædvanlig i Limburg.
