Eelerberg var af familien Vening Meinesz. Felix Andries Vening Meinesz var en nederlandsk geofysiker og geodet, der udførte banebrydende arbejde inden for geofysik og geodesi. Hans fortjenester ligger i opfindelsen af en metode til meget præcist at måle tyngdekraften. Dette gjorde det for første gang muligt at måle tyngdekraften til søs, og dermed opdagede han mange tyngdeanomalier over havbunden. Senere relaterede han disse anomalier til kontinentbevægelser.
