La Eelerberg era de la familia Vening Meinesz. Felix Andries Vening Meinesz fue un neerlandés geofísico y topógrafo que realizó trabajos pioneros en geofísica y geodesia. Sus logros se encuentran en la creación de un método para medir la gravedad con gran precisión. Así, fue la primera vez que se pudo medir la gravedad en el mar, y descubrió muchas anomalías gravitacionales sobre el lecho marino. Más tarde, relacionó estas anomalías con la deriva continental.
