La Eelerberg appartenait à la famille Vening Meinesz. Felix Andries Vening Meinesz était un Néerlandais géophysicien et géodéte qui a réalisé un travail de pionnier pour la géophysique et la géodésie. Ses mérites résident dans l'invention d'une méthode pour mesurer la gravité avec une grande précision. Cela a permis pour la première fois de mesurer la gravité en mer, et ainsi il a découvert de nombreuses anomalies gravitationnelles au-dessus du fond marin. Plus tard, il a établi un lien entre ces anomalies et le déplacement des continents.
