Der Eelerberg gehörte zur Familie Vening Meinesz. Felix Andries Vening Meinesz war ein niederländischer Geophysiker und Geodät, der bahnbrechende Arbeiten für die Geophysik und Geodäsie geleistet hat. Sein Verdienst liegt in der Entwicklung einer Methode zur äußerst genauen Messung der Erdanziehung. Damit war es erstmals möglich, auf See die Erdanziehung zu messen, und so entdeckte er viele Schwereanomalien über dem Meeresboden. Später brachte er diese Anomalien mit der Kontinentalverschiebung in Zusammenhang.
