Området Middag Humsterland var engang et hav med kystlagunerne Humsterland og Middag. Øerne var omkranset af tidevandskanaler, der førte havvandet ind i landet ved højvande. Disse indbrud skete fra den vestligt beliggende Lauwerszee, nu Lauwersmeer, efter det blev opdæmmet i 1969. Kystlinjen strakte sig tidligere helt til byen Groningen, men på grund af opfyldning af dette område blev havlerne tørre. Denne proces blev forstærket efter 1100 på grund af den mangeårige aktivitet af opdæmning.
