Under den sidste istid var Holland ikke dækket af gletsjere som i den forrige istid. Under den forrige istid pressede gletsjerne store moræner op, såsom morænen fra Veluwe. Under den sidste istid var der ikke isdække, men det var stadig ret koldt her, og der voksede ikke meget, der kunne dække jorden. De kraftige vinde blæste sandet op og afsatte det mange steder. Nogle gange blev det afsat som kilometerlange snoede rygge som disse fra Renderklippen.
