Tijdens de laatste ijstijd was Nederland niet bedekt met gletsjers zoals in de voorlaatste ijstijd. Tijdens die voorlaatste ijstijd duwden de gletsers grote stuwwallen op zoals de stuwwal van de Veluwe. Tijdens de laatste ijstijd was er wel geen ijsbedekking maar het was hier toch behoorlijk koud en er groeide weinig dat de grond beschremde. De hevige winden bliezen het zand op en zetten die neer op tal van plaatsen. Soms werd het afgezet als kilometer lange slingerende ruggen zoals deze van de Renderklippen.
