Aarlanderveen nævnes for første gang som herred i forlovelseskontrakten mellem Floris IV af Holland og Machteld af Brabant. Byen kommer gennem århundrederne i besiddelse af forskellige adelsfamilier, herunder Van Oudshoorn og Van IJsselstein. I begyndelsen af renæssancen i 1584 eller 1593 kommer Aarlanderveen i besiddelse af feltmarskal Ernst von Mansveld eller Von Mandelsloh.
