Under det tyske angreb i maj 1940 samt i efteråret 1944 måtte Opheusden evakueres, da det var kommet i ildlinjen. I kølvandet på operation Market Garden og frem til befrielsen i maj 1945 lå Opheusden på grænsen mellem det besatte og befriede område, hvilket medførte, at der fandt alvorlige kampe sted.
På grund af de mange ødelæggelser måtte der efter krigen udføres betydelige genopbygningsarbejder.
