Lors de l'attaque allemande en mai 1940 ainsi qu'à l'automne 1944, Opheusden a dû être évacué car il se trouvait sur la ligne de feu. Dans le sillage de l'opération Market Garden jusqu'à la libération en mai 1945, Opheusden était sur la frontière entre la zone occupée et la zone libérée, ce qui a entraîné de lourds combats.
En raison des nombreuses destructions, des travaux de reconstruction ont dû être réalisés après la guerre.
