Durante el ataque alemán en mayo de 1940, así como en el otoño de 1944, Opheusden tuvo que ser evacuado porque se encontraba en la línea de fuego. En la estela de la operación Market Garden hasta la liberación en mayo de 1945, Opheusden estuvo en la frontera entre el territorio ocupado y el liberado, y por ello se produjeron intensas luchas.
Debido a las numerosas destrucciones, se tuvieron que llevar a cabo las necesarias labores de reconstrucción después de la guerra.
