Während des deutschen Angriffs im Mai 1940 sowie im Herbst 1944 musste Opheusden geräumt werden, da es in die Feuerlinie geraten war. In der Nachfolge der Operation Market Garden bis zur Befreiung im Mai 1945 lag Opheusden an der Grenze zwischen dem besetzten und dem befreiten Gebiet, weshalb dort heftige Kämpfe stattfanden.
Aufgrund der zahlreichen Zerstörungen mussten nach dem Krieg die notwendigen Wiederaufbauarbeiten durchgeführt werden.
