Den matematiske Ludolph van Ceulen flyttede fra Hildesheim til Delft og derefter til Leiden. I 1594 åbnede han en skoleskærm i Leiden. I 1600 blev han udnævnt til den første professor i matematik ved Universitetet i Leiden.
Han gav det første store europæiske bidrag siden Archimedes beregnede Pi. Han kom frem til en estimat af π, der er korrekt op til 35 decimaler.
