Der Mathematiker Ludolph van Ceulen zog nach Hildesheim nach Delft und dann nach Leiden. 1594 eröffnete er eine Schirmerschule in Leiden. 1600 wurde er zum ersten Professor für Mathematik an der Universität Leiden ernannt.
Er leistete den ersten großen europäischen Beitrag, seit Archimedes π berechnete. Er kam zu einer Schätzung von π, die bis auf 35 Dezimalstellen exakt ist.
