El matemático Ludolph van Ceulen se mudó de Hildesheim a Delft y luego a Leiden. En 1594 abrió una escuela de esgrima en Leiden. En 1600 fue nombrado primer profesor de matemáticas en la Universidad de Leiden.
Hizo la primera gran contribución europea desde que Arquímedes calculó Pi. Llegó a una estimación de π, que es exacta hasta 35 cifras decimales.
