Det ligger nord for Drachten, mellem Buitenpost og De Kooten langs den provincielle vej 355. Byen havde i 2020 1.090 indbyggere. Stedet blev nævnt i det 13. århundrede som Twislum. I 1395 blev det nævnt som Opwysel, i 1441 som i Up-twyzel, i 1718 som Twysel og i 1899 som Twijel og Optwijzel. Stedsnavnet Opwysel henviser til en vejkryds, hvor det er opstået. Optwizel er stadig et vejnavn i byen.
