Se encuentra al norte de Drachten, entre Buitenpost y De Kooten en la carretera provincial 355. El pueblo tenía en 2020 1.090 habitantes. El lugar fue mencionado en el siglo XIII como Twislum. En 1395 fue mencionado como Opwysel, en 1441 como en Up-twyzel, en 1718 como Twysel y en 1899 como Twijel y Optwijzel. El nombre de lugar Opwysel se refiere a una bifurcación donde se originó. Optwizel sigue siendo un nombre de calle en el pueblo.
