Es liegt nördlich von Drachten, zwischen Buitenpost und De Kooten an der Landesstraße 355. Das Dorf hatte 2020 1.090 Einwohner. Der Ort wurde im 13. Jahrhundert als Twislum erwähnt. 1395 wurde er als Opwysel erwähnt, 1441 als in Up-twyzel, 1718 als Twysel und 1899 als Twijel und Optwijzel. Der Ortsname Opwysel verweist auf eine Gabelung, an der es entstanden ist. Optwizel ist immer noch ein Straßenname im Dorf.
