Dalen opstod i det sene middelalder, på grænsen mellem Weert-landet og grevskabet Horn. Formodentlig i det 15. århundrede blev der bygget et kapel, helliget den hellige Barbara. I 1617 blev dette kapel ophøjet til sognekirke. Godefridus Guyten blev udnævnt som den første præst.
Den nuværende Sankt Barbara kirke blev bygget i årene efter Anden Verdenskrig og er et design af arkitekten Jos Wielders, som også havde tegnet den forgængeri 1923, der blev ødelagt i 1944.
