Det ligger sydvest for Bozum og nord for Sneek. Bykern ligger ved Zwette, med mest beboelse langs den nordlige bred. N354 løber langs landsbyen. Indbyggerne i Scharnegoutum kaldes Sûkerfretters. I 2021 havde landsbyen 1.630 indbyggere. Under landsbyen hører også bydelene De Polle og Nijeklooster.
