Het ligt ten zuidwesten van Bozum en ten noorden van Sneek. De dorpskern ligt aan de Zwette , met de meeste bewoning aan de noordelijke oever. Langs het dorp loopt N354.De inwoners van Scharnegoutum hebben als bijnaam Sûkerfretters . In 2021 telde het dorp 1.630 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen De Polle en Nijeklooster.
