Si trova a sud-ovest di Bozum e a nord di Sneek. Il centro del villaggio si trova lungo la Zwette, con la maggior parte degli abitanti sulla riva settentrionale. Lungo il villaggio passa la N354. Gli abitanti di Scharnegoutum hanno il soprannome di Sûkerfretters. Nel 2021 il villaggio contava 1.630 abitanti. Il villaggio comprende anche le frazioni De Polle e Nijeklooster.
