Se encuentra al suroeste de Bozum y al norte de Sneek. El núcleo del pueblo está a orillas del Zwette, con la mayoría de las viviendas en la costa norte. Junto al pueblo transcurre la N354. Los habitantes de Scharnegoutum tienen el apodo de Sûkerfretters. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 1,630 habitantes. También se incluyen en el territorio del pueblo las localidades De Polle y Nijeklooster.
